The brand and showroom's name, 1616 / arita japan, is a nod to its location in the historic ceramics town of Arita on Kyushu Island in southern Japan. Arita, where Aritayaki—a unique type of Japanese pottery—was first introduced by the Koreans in 1616, still produces ceramics crafted by local artisans using the distinctive ingredient of clay made from crushed stone. This rich history and traditional craftsmanship are the essence of 1616 / arita japan created for Momota Touen.
In 2020, Momota Touen’s Arita showroom underwent a remarkable transformation, resulting in a 330-square-metre space that is a testament to the unique design philosophy of 1616 / arita japan. The meticulously designed showroom, flooded with natural light, offers a variety of settings that allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the distinctive lifestyle offered by 1616 / arita japan, making it a captivating experience. This thoughtfully designed and crafted spacious showroom now showcases distinct living spaces, including a welcoming fireplace-adorned living room, a kitchen, a luxurious bathroom, and a café area.
As you explore the showroom, you'll discover the careful selection of materials, each a testament to the Arita porcelain production process. The wooden flooring, crafted from the finest Douglas fir by Dinesen in the Natural variant, lends an air of natural elegance to the space. In addition to floors, the Douglas wood is shaped into bespoke solutions such as the coffee counter at the café, wall claddings, kitchen cabinets and furniture pieces.
The warm-toned ceramic stone plastered ceilings and walls, a material intrinsic to Arita porcelain, infuse the space with authenticity and heritage. Using brick for exhibition stands adds an industrial yet sophisticated element, creating a captivating juxtaposition of materials.
Creative director Teruhiro Yanagihara’s fascination with the experience and skills of the local Arita craftsmen is reflected in the showroom, infusing the space with a palpable sense of artistry and artisanship. He created the 1616 / arita japan ceramics brand for Momota-Touen Corporation, with contemporary products that can be used daily, though made with the extraordinary artistry, thinness, and strength of original Arita ware.
