The ambition for the design of this Basque home in northern Spain was to create a minimalist, elegant and peaceful home that radiates a sense of relaxation and equanimity. The Amsterdam-based architecture firm zU-studio achieved the desired atmosphere by limiting the project to just four materials.

A beautiful context emerges in the interplay of the large glass panes, the grey stone that forms the transition between indoors and out and the pale Douglas planks that stretch out through the length of the room. The three different materials are used to create a harmonious mix of levels in the flat and provide unobstructed views of the city on one side and the sea on the other.
ZU-studio played with the dynamics of the room by choosing mixed-width Douglas planks, which add a dynamic expression in tune with the light colours and complementary materials. One element that was preserved when the flat was refurbished is the steadfast dark fireplace, a central object that lends the room a strong character and original feel.
The project’s crowning touch was designed by zU-studio in collaboration with Zanon in Venice: the brass handles on the sliding doors and the window frames are a subtle detail that was included into the project in a nod to Italian architect Carlo Scarpa.
