BOX - Wooden Objects in Mathematical Systems
Danish product and furniture designer Anna Søgaard is currently presenting her first solo exhibition BOX – Wooden Objects in Mathematical Systems exhibition. The exhibition is displayed at Officinet and is running from February 7 to March 2, 2025.
The exhibition explores the relationship between functional design and the natural beauty of wood. It emphasizes Søgaard’s fascination with simple yet profound functions, such as storage, while also diving into the interaction between the user and the object itself.
“Through this exhibition, visitors are invited into my world and my deep appreciation for mathematical systems, repetition, and order. My hope is to inspire the same enthusiasm in the viewer, and let them experience the sense of calm and satisfaction that emerges when objects relate to one another and fit together perfectly.” – Anna Søgaard
Anna regularly works with repurposed wood from the industry, including Dinesen offcuts, which are showcased in eight of her latest pieces featured in the BOX – Wooden Objects in Mathematical Systems exhibition.
By repurposing offcuts, Søgaard allows the natural dimensions of the wood to define the framework and system of her objects. Focusing on the unique qualities of each wood type—such as grain pattern, hardness, and color tone—her designs invite personal interpretation, fostering a deeper connection between the user and the material. Through the use of leftover materials, including Dinesen offcuts, she highlights how the wood’s natural characteristics shape both the functionality and aesthetics of her work.
The collaboration between Dinesen and Søgaard began back in 2022 at The Cabinet Makers Autumn Exhibition, where Dinesen provided wood for “Cabinet on Wheels”, a piece designed to question which items and objects we truly need in our daily lives, encouraging greater consideration of how and what we consume.
Cabinet on Wheels was later displayed at the prestigious 2023 Mindcraft Project, an exhibition exploring the theme of our connection with nature, showcasing their material knowledge and expertise in crafting objects.
